We’ll learn essential vocabulary and phrases to navigate stores, markets, and malls with confidence, ensuring a smooth shopping experience in Spanish-speaking countries.
¡A vitrinear! (Let’s go window shopping!)
Theme: Shopping Goals:
- Master vocabulary related to clothing, accessories, and common store items.
- Practice asking for prices, sizes, and colors.
- Learn how to express needs and preferences while shopping.
- Engage in conversations with store personnel and fellow shoppers.
- Develop basic haggling skills (optional).
Words & Phrases:
- Shopping: comprar (to buy), tienda (store), mercado (market), centro comercial (mall), cajero/a (cashier), vendedor/a (salesperson), bolsa (bag), tarjeta de crédito (credit card), dinero en efectivo (cash)
- Clothing & Accessories: camisa (shirt), pantalones (pants), vestido (dress), zapatos (shoes), sombrero (hat), bufanda (scarf), collar (necklace), aretes (earrings), reloj (watch)
- Asking & Describing: ¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much does it cost?), ¿Qué talla tiene? (What size is it?), ¿De qué color es? (What color is it?), Me gusta (I like), Me queda bien (It fits me well), Busco… (I’m looking for…)
- Numbers (review from previous weeks): uno (one), dos (two), tres (three), cuatro (four), cinco (five), etc.
Activities:
Warm-up: Play a shopping-themed charades game. Students act out different clothing items or store departments, and the class tries to guess the word in Spanish.
Vocabulary Bingo: Create bingo cards with Spanish shopping vocabulary words. Listen to a Spanish shopping dialogue or read a shopping-related text. Students mark off the words they hear/read. The first person with a bingo wins!
Shopping Role-playing: Set up role-playing scenarios like asking for help from a salesperson, trying on clothes, or paying at the cashier. Practice using polite phrases and responding to questions in Spanish.
Catalog Challenge: Provide students with a Spanish-language clothing catalog or online store webpage. In groups, have them create a shopping list with desired items, describing them in Spanish and specifying sizes and colors.
Haggling Challenge (Optional): Introduce basic haggling phrases in Spanish. Students can practice negotiating prices at a simulated market stall, using their newfound skills.
Bonus: Plan a virtual shopping trip to a Spanish-speaking country. Research popular stores and brands, create a shopping list with a budget in mind, and present your shopping experience to the class in Spanish.
